The Thuringowa Sustainable Village Project is an innovative project of Thuringowa City Council intended to increase the adoption of sustainable design features into the region’s housing and urban development.
During 2007, Council coordinated an extensive focus group program involving over 110 local urban development government and industry representatives who worked together to identify ways to increase the availability of cost competitive, tropically designed sustainable homes in North Queensland.
The ideas, concepts and methodologies identified by the focus groups and further information on the project are available from the Sustainable Village website or by phoning Thuringowa city Council on phone 4773 8411.
The next stage of the project will involve a tender being offered for a private consortium to construct a 1.1ha sustainable housing precinct at 1320 Riverway Drive, Kelso to demonstrate the key findings of the focus group program and to provide a tangible demonstration of best practice sustainable development for the North Queensland region.
A summary of the Thuringowa Sustainable Village Project to September 2007 (as submitted to the 2007 PIA Awards for Planning Excellence) is available below.
