OVERVIEW
  • Effective community-based education and involvement in catchment and coastal zone management is reliant on a commitment to fostering partnerships, adaptability, and ownership within a framework of co-learning.

  • Townsville City Council (TCC), as part of its Total Water Cycle Management community education and involvement program (supporting Creek to Coral), has encouraged a partnering methodology which has ultimately led to community ownership of catchment programs and initiatives.

  • A co-learning curriculum-based programme within schools, together with Creekwatch catchment involvement opportunities, is building an effective city-wide catchment network which is working towards improving understanding, enthusiasm and capacity within the community.

  • This presentation explores and maps the journey of community-based catchment education and involvement, guided by the principles of Community Development; where the journey is as important as the destination.
